Cheez-Its and Sea Biscuit (Sheila)

So this looks like this will be my last post as a guest-blogger for Dean.

After all, Sunday night is the only night I watch television during the whole week - except that at the moment, I have no television, so I have basically invited myself over to a friend's house in order to watch my absolutely ridiculous and ultimately satisfying Sunday night line-up: Sex and the City, Project Greenlight, and the new reality TV show which completely HOOKED ME IN during its premiere last week: The Restaurant.

Anyway, having revealed myself as a complete and utter MORON, I wanted to thank you all for welcoming me here so heartily, and post two other things before I leave you:

Dave Barry's latest made me laugh out loud. Basically it has to do with suddenly realizing (time and time and time again) that he has gone into some kind of fugue state and has eaten an entire box of Cheez-Its.

When I regain consciousness, I'm in my driveway. The Cheez-Its box is on the car seat next to me, empty. My belly is grotesquely bloated, and I'm covered with sticky orange grit. Slowly, the horrible truth dawns on me: Somebody has stolen my Cheez-Its and surgically implanted a bowling ball in my abdomen.

No, seriously, I realize that I have consumed the entire box of Cheez-Its. I've done this many times, and for years I believed it was my fault. Fortunately, I live in the United States of America, where we are gradually coming to understand that nothing we do is ever our fault, especially if it is really stupid.

So just go ahead and read the whole thing, and laugh.

The second thing is: I saw "Sea Biscuit" on Friday night during its opening-night frenzy (in a theatre in Manhattan where the A/C went belly-up in the middle of the show, leaving all of us fanning ourselves like a bunch of Scarlett O'Haras) - and I highly recommend it. There are two moments of out-and-out over-the-top CHEESE (where I winced in my seat, and thought: "Okay. That clearly means that the producers did not fully trust the material. They should have just let well enough alone.") But the rest of the movie was good enough that I forgave the two moments of CHEESE. (Go and see it for yourself, and let me know which moments YOU thought were the cheesiest. I would bet that we agree.)

But the horses are unbelievable, the characters are fantastic, and during the climactic race, the entire sweaty un-air-conditioned jaded New York audience erupted into cheers.

Little moments like that remind me of why it's good, on occasion, and satisfying, to be a human being.

And William Macy shows up, randomly, in the film, and the second he appeared on screen, the entire audience started laughing. Yes, he looked very amusing, with this teeny little penciled-in mustache, and he plays a comedic character as well. But the group-laughter had nothing to do with any of that. The laughter was a group-laugh of recognition. Of: "Oh! Him! I LOVE him! HE'S in this? He's GREAT!"

Now THAT is a great career for an actor. THAT is something to aspire to.

On that note: good night, everybody, thank you Dean, and I'll catch you all on the flipside.

When I saw the movie, the audience applauded twice: when Seabiscuit beat War Admiral and at the end when he won the "hunnirt grander" at Santa Anita. Great photography, especially the races, and, yeah, a little over the top but that suits the Depression era, I think. The casting is wonderful especially the actor who plays Tom Smith (his name escapes me just now). Don't wait for it to come out on cable or DVD, it should be seen on the big screen.

Yes, Chris Cooper (an absolute treasure) played Tom Smith. That man can play anything. See Adaptation, if you haven't already!

"Sex And The City" and "Project Greenlight"?

I pity the fool that watches those, but skips "The Wire." The one essential show for my wife and me this summer. What other show could generate such enormous tension by having a fat bald guy walk out of his office to watch a truck? The show is genius.
