Hollywood Succumbs (Jerry)

Summer blockbusters are being hit hard by word of mouth, reports the Christian Science Monitor. Not just ordinary word-of-mouth, but Internet-amplified word-of-mouth. Ang Lee's Hulk nabbed the #1 box-office spot its opening weekend. The next weekend, its take was down a whopping seventy percent, setting a new record for second-week falloff of a film that opened at the top.

Apparently, the studios are scrambling to try to figure out how to market their films in the face of this phenomenon. (They've apparently tried schmoozing Harry Knowles of Ain't It Cool News, but his site's community collectively has an extremely acute shill detector.) Here's a radical idea: how about making better movies?

I don't know about the rest of you, but The Hulk was one of those movies I could tell right away would be a waste of time and money. I couldn't believe it when the thing opened at number one! Concerning Dean's idea about making better movies: do we dare hope?

Sorry, that would be Jerry's idea about making better movies. :)

It would seem that Hollywood has plenty of time to study on making better pics...as silent as they've been lately. Politically speaking, that is.

Heh. Now THERE'S an idea. Silent film stars of the new century!

Occasionally this happens because Hollywood is too successful.

In other words, they market the hell out of a movie, open it on 10 gazillion screens and fans flock to see it the first weekend.

After that...it's over.

Unless it's worth seeing a second time.

This summer's movie lineup was most definitely sub-par. Hollywood better get its act together. I too knew instantly that Hulk would suck after seeing the first ad for it. Charlies Angels 2, Legally Blonde 2, 2 Fast 2 Furious...who needs word-of-mouth to know these movies suck?

In media, we are taught-

Hollywood plans for (out of 10 movies) 6 to be flops, 3 to be average takings and one to be fantastic!

mind you this changes one or too everynow and again...

Better movies? Too hard. Easier to hire friends as marketing consultants and throw them stupid amounts of money to figure out how to put sh!t in pretty packaging.

I'm sick of Hollywood trying to dazzle us with all these damn special effects. They need to put their money in hiring better writters than special effect crews. Hell, I know a few drugs that will give me special effects worth more my money than bull Hollywood throws together
