Blogrolling.com r0x0rs!

I cannot believe I took so long to look into using Blogrolling.com for the Dean's World blogroll. Every blogger I talked to said it was worth it.

It was technically very simple, if annoying, to convert our current blogroll. They really ought to have an "import HTML" option. But once it was done, it was a snap to put into place. It's much easier to add and remove blogs from it than the old way.

You'll all notice now that the blogroll also lets you know when new content has appeared in the last 24 hours on any given blog. Nice, huh? I hope you all like it.

Ack!

why didn't you alphabetize it?

What is the ping URL for the auto updates? Isn't that how you do it?

Posted by Del Simmons on June 30, 2003 at 7:38 AM

...also, how'd you get to say, "new stuff"?

Posted by Ara Rubyan on June 30, 2003 at 7:42 AM

Never mind...I figured it out.

Why didn't you alphabetize your blogroll? Did I already ask you that? Right.

Posted by Ara Rubyan on June 30, 2003 at 7:48 AM

Ara: I'd like them to be alphabetized, but I prefer the option where recently-updated blogs appear at the top. This seems to be an either/or option, so far as I can see.

Del: Pinging http://rpc.blogrolling.com/pinger/ is the one that I hear is most reliable.

Dean -- I alphabetize mine and set the "newness window" to 24 hours. Best of worlds IMHO.

I wonder if that is why my browser crashes when I try to load Dean's world this AM (Netscape on UNIX)? Oh sure, IE on the Windows client works, but it is so slow...

I dunno Owen, it's only a small bit of Javascript code, and nothing particularly complex.

Dean, speaking of new problems this morning, I encountered a little glitch of my own: your blogroll simply wouldn't show up! I mean, it wasn't there any more.

Turns out the problem was that I block cookies, etc., for most sites. In order to get your blogroll to appear, I had to enable cookies and referrers for blogrolling.com.

Shows up just fine now.

Just in case anyone else has been running into the same problem here this morning...

Hey Dean, can you change the "Dancing with Dogs" link to http://www.madhoo.com ? That will make my blog look updated. Thanks :)

I'm a new MT blogger who doesn't know how to set myself up so my blog shows up as having new content. Just letting you know.

Hope it's not too difficult.

I always thought you didn't use a blogroll because you choose not to... I think it's great. The *New* part is the best feature, IMO. I set mine to 3 hours. I'm thinking of extending that.

Hey Brian:

Just go into WEBLOG CONFIG, then click PREFERENCES. Scroll about halfway down to "Notify the following sites when I update my blog" and check either blo.gs or weblogs.com. You don't need to ping both, from what I understand they exchange data with each other so either one will do.

That's all you need to do. Blogrolls all over the planet will automatically notice your new content if you do this.

I suggest you also turn on pings and trackbacks, by the way.
