Once again, the Trivia Master is made a fool of. Not one but two former heads of the Republican National Committee have done American Express commercials. The most recent was Bob Dole, who I had forgotten about. The original RNC head, however, and the man I was looking for, was Scrappy Little Son-of-a-Gun Bill Miller, who did an American Express commercial in the 1970s. He was one of the original, "Do you know me?/Don't Leave Home Without It!" celebrities in the famous line of American Express ads.
Ara Rubyan won the points in an AIM chat we had last night. Bob Hawkins gets half the points for being the first to mention Miller, but he got the first name wrong. Miller was indeed Barry Goldwater's running-mate in 1964, but his first name was not "Walter."
Double points to Ara for pointing out my mistake: not one but two RNC chairmen have been in Amex ads: Dole and Miller.
* Update! * Trivia Master's Wife has informed the Trivia Master that Ara is wrong! Bob Dole did commercials for Visa, and not for American Express! About which he believes she is quite correct. Ara loses his extra points, but keeps his initial points. Trivia Master loses triple points for being so stupid all the way around.
"Walter" is no surprise considering a prevalent (political) rhyme making the rounds in the '64 campaign:
"Here's a riddle that's a killer,
Who the hell is William Miller?"
And, for a bit of tangental trivia, who remembers the slogan on the green & gold cans of "Goldwater"?
"In your heart, you know he's right."
(Back from a weekend out of town)
Close Ara. That was the campaign slogan. The one on the can (over a watermark outline of Arizona) said:
"The Right Drink For The Conservative Taste"
BTW, I have never seen one of these cans anywhere since those days.
