More Euroskepticism
Perry de Havilland over at Samizdata has some choice words for Tory cowardice in the face of assaults on liberty. Really, although I'm not involved in this debate (being a Yank and all), I increasingly wonder why anyone is so hot on the EU--and increasingly weary of people who portray its critics as isolationists, racists, and reactionaries who are fearful of the future.
It looks like most of the anti-EU folks are concerned about losing democracy itself. The more I read about the EU, the more I think I'd be worried as hell about that too.
If anything, Dean, it's even worse than you might realize. It may be ever so slightly dated at this point, but I'd recommend you read "The Rotten Heart of Europe," by Bernard Connolly, a British economist who used to work for the European Commission until being fired for what basically amounts to blasphemy, i.e., suggesting that the EU may be something short of infallible and perfect .
