It's Wrong. It's Just Wrong!

I'm sorry. The geekitude is getting out of control, people! Something must be done. I'm thinking Constitutional Amendment.

These people must be stopped!

Dean, just contemplating that gizmo gives me a headache!

Selective Luddite™ that I am, I've managed so far to avoid getting a cell phone.

I prefer radio to TV, especially if the radio has an analog dial which lights up in the dark.

And I still use a slide rule (Keuffel & Esser Log Log Duplex Decitrig, celluloid over mahogany, vintage 1940) in preference to a calculator.

I mean, "geek" I like. But preferably "retro geek."

And I keep track of my schedule, thank you, in a little 2003 calendar booklet which I carry in the hip pocket of my blue jeans. The "stylus" is known as a pencil, yellow no. 2, with a red rubber eraser.

If you think that watch is silly, have you seen the new one that has 128MB of flash storage, and a zip out USB plug? It's a step beyond those keychain HD's!

Well yeah, but those are cool.

I dunno about the flash storage/watch, but those keychain drives are the bee's tits! Compusa had them on sale and I picked up a 128m stick for $50. I figure it's because it's only usb 1.1 and Compusa wanted to move them out, but what the heck, for $50... :)

It's great, I plug this puppy into any usb-equipped computer and it Just Works. Apple or Wintel. Is that cool, or what?

Paul: I agree on the watch. I was reading the blurb and thinking "great, a $300 address book." Sheesh.

One handheld device I found worthwhile was one made by Sharp. Cant' recall the name but it has a StrongARM cpu, 32M rom and 64m ram. It looks a lot like most of the handhelds, BUT, this one has a tiny QWERTY keyboard and Linux. Sweet.

I'm waiting for them to meld something like that to a cell phone. Full blown digital online with voice. Yeah... :)

Resistance is futile.

Casey, they just came out with newer and improved Sharp models of the one you're thinking of, sometime in the last week on slashdot it was covered.

Strong Bad: "Oh holy cr*p!"
Great, yet another gadget that I will pine after! Thanks, Dean. ; )

Speaking of keychain HD's I got one at an industry conference today. Pingtec, 128 MB capacity. Unfortunately, my XP box will not recognize it. It knows it's in there because I can remove it from the system; but it does not show up as my E: drive, or any drive at all.

I've tried everything: remove, replace, uninstall, reinstall, move to another machine, plug into various USB ports on the same machine.

Anyone got an idea?

Hmmm, that's the darndest thing I've heard, Ara. I've yet to have any problems with usb devices with XP. I have a usb 1.1 128mb drive from Compusa and it's worked in every slot I put it in.

I'm assuming you are using XP Pro, not Home? Also, how old is your system? More than 2 years? Have you tried the drive in other machines to see if they see it?

My first reaction is to wonder if you tried to plug a usb 2.0 memory drive into a usb 1.1 port...

I hope this helps.

Casey:

We're running XP Pro. So...

Yesterday evening I had a chance to test the HD on a machine using Win 2K. Bingo! It worked. Dunno the version of USB on the Win 2K box.

Other attendees took their HDs back to the hotel and got them to work on laptops running XP Pro. Bingo! It worked.

--You got me curious, so I googled Pingtec. Their website is http://www.mashington.com/meindex.htm. They don't specify 1.1 or 2.0 in their product descriptions, but they do list 1MB/sec thruput for the drives. This tells me they're usb 1.1.

I also found a nifty online store http://www.usbshop.com/usb-shop/ which has all sorts of usb/firewire devices. Kewl. Anyway, apparently Pingtec is marketed as Mashington (see website address above), and the only Mashington drives they sell are all 1.1.

Uh, oh. After having written all of the above, and come to the conclusion that the drive won't work on your system 'cuz it's only 1.1, I realized something: my keychain drive is only 1.1, and it works fine in my usb 2.0 port at home... Sheesh. What a waste of logic! [embarassed grin]

Oh, well, I'll post this anyway, in case someone finds the links of interest.

If you can tell me that you've plugged other usb devices into your system on that same port, and they worked, I'm stumped. :(

Same exact problem as Ara. Pingtec "super mini drive"128mb pendrive which will not work on my XP (toshiba) laptop but fine on win2000. Does the exact same thing as stated above on Ara's post. ??????
