Europe "United"

Andrew, my Euroskeptic pal, has noticed this short article on the partially-released draft of a proposed European Constutition. He has some rather pithy comments of his own on the matter:

Ein Reich, Ein Volk, Ein Euro!

Have I ever mentioned that the Euroskeptic crowd feels rather strongly about these things? Funny bit is, most of the Euroskeptics' critics are content to portray them as isolationists, racists, and silly ignoramuses running away from the modern world.

That seems familiar somehow.

Its odd that way down in the article a slightly disparaging remark is made toward the 'one other time' that Europe was united was under Charlemagne...Charlemagne was a French emporer (I think the grandson of the also famous King Pippin/Pepin) who managed to rustle the disparate feudal kingdoms in France and Belgium under one authority, and that with the help of several bodies within Europe, like the Vatican, and the English...the Benedictine monk Alcuin comes was instrumental in assisting Charlemagne in bringing a 'mini-Renaissance' to an otherwise Dark Ages Europe through an emphasis on education and reading and writing...

that is, if I remember my history well enough...which I probably don't...

But I personally hate the gymnastics these decrepit mummified post-modern Euros go through in order to claim 'pride' and legitimacy through Western civilisation while through the other side of their mouths they scald all those who are genuine in their admiration of it as isolationist, racist, bigoted as well as xenophobic.

Neurotic, to say the least.

And the Euro constitution will NEVER equal America's. Read closer on what it lays out for those who become part of it...no general election or grass-roots participation in choosing their reps, and an iron-clad fastening of membership to the degree that any nation who determines that remaining in the Union is detrmimental to their welfare is NOT ALLOWED TO DEPART WITHOUT EXPRESS PERMISSION OF THE UNION.

Wasn't there something in America's Declaration that addressed that???? Hmmmm...that seems to be woefully lacking in Europes quote-unquote constitution.

Go to Samizdata.com and read what is being discussed there...very enlightening.

Sharon, Karl der Grosse (he could have been equally considered German or French, and his palace was located at Aachen) was actually the grandson of Charles Martel -- the hammer -- who in 732 smashed up a largescale Arab invasion that got into central France from the Spanish peninsula that the new and then-triumphant islamic empire had conquered some 20 years earlier.

Much of the reason that Europe will find great difficulty in organizing a single unitary state is that it comprises numerous separate nations (using this word as I do in the strictly European sense, meaning a unitary people and culture amongst people who intermarry and so maintain its continuity). Here in the United States, with the exceptions of the black, hispanic and asian nations which may never become totally integral to the main and presently predominant European white American nation, we are largely a single culture and people. Thus we can maintain a unitary government. This may not be possible in Europe.

I don't think the EU has the same goals as the US, and I'm okay with that.
