Cool Can

Well, now, isn't this cool? A company called Tempra Technologies has developed a self-cooling beverage can. You just open it and within a couple of minutes the temperature of the beverage drops about 30 degrees.

They also do work in self-heating meals, I see.

Can they make underwear that works the same way?
"liar, liar, pants...well, pants cooling 30F in a matter of minutes...man, I'm freezing my ass off."

Dang, I sure hope the folks at the Steven's Point Brewery pick up on this one! Point Special beer, in self-cooling cans..... now, that would be something else!

how do it know?

Forget it, Paul...

The operative question is not "What if this gizmo doesn't work". Instead, it is "What if it DOES work?"

Applied to beer, it means my wife will be paying an extra $3-4 for a 24-bottle case of Point Special, every time she picks it up at the local Woodman's Foods supermarket on the far west side of Madison. Besides which, they already keep their beer in supersize coolers right at the store. So why do we need a built-in microcooler right in each can? Besides, you surely have a refrigerator at the rectory house of your church over in Iowa. (I can't imagine you've been drinking warm beer all these decades, like the Limeys.)

Something tells me this invention will wind up being referred to as the Beercan from Hell. Oh, to think it would have come to this, a damned can which tries to think for me.

All I have to say is..."Meet George Jetson..."

Something else, Arnold; dunno about you guys, but I like my beer cold.

So summer comes along, they're storing the beer at "room" temperature, probably 80 degrees, I pop the top, and three minutes later (hell, I want to drink the thing, not watch it!) it's down to a chilly, er, 50 degrees...

Yuck.

Nope. Not gonna work. :)

An interesting idea. There was a company about 20 years ago pushing a similar idea, but it turned out to be a complete fraud. There's nothing wrong with the concept (if you quickly release a gas under pressure, especially the ones used for refrigerants, it rapidly cools the surroundings. The fraud of the original company (who's name I have long forgotten) was that it cost a few bucks a can when they claimed the cost was about 20 or 30 cents. As I recall they discovered that they couldn't get the cost down early on but just proceeded with fake press releases, etc. The stock had quite a run before collapsing. It will be interesting to see if these guys actually got it to work in a cost effective way or if the original guys just got out of prison and are going to see if they can pull off the same scam twice.

I think they can do it cheaply, there's been lots of advance in the state of the art in using the same technique to 'carbonate' beer on demand; those weird Guiness variants and some other stouts have a nitrogen packet at the bottom that makes it fizzy when opened. Does cool it a bit too, just enough for stout drinking from room temperature. Not my favorite, but I have a friend who swears by them.

So they should be able to do it fairly cheaply, but I can't see the motivation, except not having to have a cooler when out and about.

So it should

Given the press release is three years old, I'm not holding out a lot of hope for self-chilling beers when I get off my arse and do some yard work -- at least not this week.

Well now, don't I feel stupid? That's the second time this week I've linked something that's significantly out of date. I'm going to have to start being more careful about these things.

Self cooling and heating technology has been around for many years. Hundreds of stockholders have invested in International Thermal Packaging, Inc. and other companies.
International Thermal Packaging illegally sold or transferred it's patents for both technologies to Tempra Technology in 2000. Do not invest in either of these companies.

From the press release:
"SELF-CHILLING BEVERAGE CAN FINALLY A REALITY AS TEMPRA TECHNOLOGY SIGNS DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENT WITH CROWN CORK & SEAL
"
further
"The can is non-toxic, discharges no gases, is completely recyclable and is capable of cooling the beverage by 30°F in only three minutes. " ;-)

it´s realy a useful invention....
