Server Outage
Dean's World's been unavailable for most of the day today. Somewhere around 11:00 our hosting provider had a fire and many of their clients were offline. Fortunately no one was hurt and, rather impressively given the circumstances, everything seems to be back up and running again.
I'll cross my fingers and hope we don't go down again. This is the first major outage in over a year of service, so I can't blame Verve Hosting too much.
My site is still down.
Of course, it went down just as I was writing a long entry.
Damn, I missed you.
That fire must have been widespread. I'm still down and so is Instadude, among others. I'm starting to feel withdrawal symptoms.
I WANT MY BLOG BACK!!!!
Michele told me that it affected Host Matters, too.
You don't know what you have until it's gone.
And now I realize the depth of my blogging addiction.
Talk about life among the ESUs (electronic sudden unfortunates). Some time back, one of Dean's readers emailed me a question: "Arnold, why don't you start up your own blogsite?"
I didn't have a good answer. Then. Now, I can see that the gods of blogcity have arranged to make life difficult for those who maintain their own sites, and comparatively easy for us mere commenters. The rain always comes down hardest on someone else's parade.

Quick somebody make Rob a guest poster!
DISCRIMINATIONS is down, too. I guess if the world can do without InstaOne for a day (?), it can do without me, too. Trouble is, without the blog through which to vent, I have to spend all my time talking to real people, or worse, myself....
I was wondering what was up with Instapundit.
Glad to hear no one was hurt, hope all of the servers are ok too. Disaster recovery is a pain, and so is building redundant systems that fail over automatically, something Moveable Type's design doesn't seem to lend itself to from what I can tell poking around with it a bit.
Too bad Glenn Reynold (unlike Mr. Sullivan) hasn't pulled in significant donations, or I'd try to sell him on building a redundant system (consulting dollars yummy!)
The worst part is, it's in prime COTV time! Glad to see you're back up.
So that's what was going on. I tried to access Dean's World shortly before noon my time-- no dice. Tried several times. Nope. Ran in to town to take care of some errands and eat at the cafe.
Back home into the early afternoon. Tried again. Still no Dean's World. By this time, I was feeling like a smoker in search of his next smoke, last pack in the house empty, rummaging through the pockets of old mothballed overcoats in the closet, hoping to unearth a cigarette.
Gee, Dean, am I glad you're back!
I'm fascinated by the fact that multiple hosting services were brought down by this--I use Verve Hosting, which I've found generally very reliable. You guys are using other services but you were also affected. So the fire must have affected some regional connectivity provider. Or, more likely, services like Verve are renting space on some third party's server.
Interesting to know that I'm actually on the same computer as a lot of you guys, even though we use different companies.
Dean, in the meanwhile, did you know you've been named Honorary Girl by the Girls! Girls! Girls! Blog????
Poor Ith has been inundated now (thank you!)
