Idol Thoughts

The background singers were less annoying tonight, although they still marred Ruben's best song. He also seems to have hated Smile, maybe even didn't understand the song. It's probably too subtle for him.

Clay's version of Vincent wasn't as bad as the judges said. But he sucked 2/3rds of the cool right out of Mack the Knife. In fairness, that's a tough song to do without sounding cheesy. But he sounded cheesy. He almost messed up Unchained Melody, although he pulled it out impressively in the end. But yes, he is fundamentally a ballad and show tune singer. Nothing wrong with that.

The best performer of the night was Kimberly Locke. She'll probably be voted off. Which is too bad, because I think she should probably win.

I disliked Clay's "Vincent" even before he messed up. His interpretation was lackluster, there wasn't any flow. I didn't care for "Mack the Knife" either. And although his Unchained Melody was technically brilliant, I thought he oversang it. It just didn't move me. In fact I didn't get any emotion from him at all tonight.

I really liked Ruben's "Smile" - in fact, I thought it was his second best performance to date (after "A Whole New World"). He sang "Signed, Sealed, Delivered - I'm Yours" well, but he just couldn't take it anywhere with that excreble arrangement. "If Ever I'm In Your Arms Again" was excellent overall - you could really hear that it meant something to him - but it didn't help that he blew the third to the last note of the night. A good night for Ruben but not the top of his form.

Kim had her best three performances ever I think. She just blew me away from the word go ("Band Of Gold" is a favorite anyway). I didn't recognize the song "Anyone Who Ever Had a Heart"(?), and it isn't the type of song I like, but her performance reached deep inside and touched me. And "Inseperable" was more of the same - depth, emotion, richness; I don't think Natalie Cole could have done any better.

But if the observation that voting seems to lag by a week holds true, Kim will be sent home tomorrow night (she was ungood last week). And if you were to vote based on a cumulative score she is definitely the underdog - she has had lots of brilliant performances but a number of real duds too, and Ruben and Clay have very consistently varied between good and excellent (except tonight's "Vincent").

And Clay has never before been in the bottom two or even three. Is it even possible to outvote his fan base?

In the end I think Kim's best performances are better than Clay's best performances. And if I have to pick who I want to listen to again next week I pick Ruben & Kim.

I'd love to hear them do a duet! Maybe tomorrow night.

You suck at reviews! You're the only people who I've heard have disliked Clay's performances. He's a hell of a lot better than Ruban is. You've got to be messed up to think Kimberly should win. I'd like to see how many notes you can't hit that of course Clay can. One of his best performances was "Mack the Knife". He should get it recorded 'cause it would sell BIG! Don't review things that you don't know how to review on!

Obviously I have to disagree with your opinions although you are entitled to them. I'm a Clay fan and always will be and I feel that he should have won although it doesn't bother me that he didn't. Clay is doing better and is the one who will have a long career unlike Ruben. The best of luck to Ruben and Kim for they both have great talent, I just feel that no one can compete with Clay and his talent is undeniable.

Hi! I was searching all over the web to find the songs that the contestants have sung since I have missed the two shows so I was wondering if you could post the performances that the contestants have sung and I was also wondering, is there going to have a rerun? Thank you,
Tanya
