See Beautiful Detroit

I live between Detroit and Ann Arbor. As is so often the case for suburbanites, I often tell people I'm "from Detroit," even though I've never lived there. On the other hand, when I was a repo man, I crawled all over a good portion of that city, probably more than most of its residents. I also used to work downtown sometimes as a computer trainer.

I must say, the Curious Facts About Detroit site certainly does represent facets of the city that I know and, uh, know.

Someday, I want to put

Dean,

Do ya live "Downriver"? I always just say I'm from Detroit myself. Saves time.

I've lived in and around the city about half my life. Currently in Warren (Yo). Back in seventy something, my buddy and I were getting pasted at a bar in Rotterdam. A group of surly looking characters were sitting at the other end of the bar looking at us and speaking a language other than Dutch or English. Their attitude was hostile. After a time, the bartender came over and said that these guys wanted to know where we were from. My friend said, "Brooklyn" in a New York aggressive kind of voice. The bartender told the surly dudes and they chatted amongst themselves some more. The bartender asked me where I was from and I told him quietly that I was from Detroit. He went over and told the guys at the end of the bar and that got them jibber-jabbering and sneaking looks at me. When the bartender came back, he's brought us a couple of beers from the now strangely quiet guys at the end of the bar.
