Colors

I have a question for those of you who read this blog.

Over on the far right, there's an option to "Change Dean's Color!" It lets you change the color scheme of this blog, in case you don't like the default color selections.

Here's my question: does anyone like this feature and use it? I mean, beyond entertainment value, do you actually find it useful?

I would specifically like to hear from any person who will say, "Yes, your default colors suck, and I use that feature to make your stuff easier for me to read."

I find your default colors to be the most pleasing and least strenuous to the eye.

I use the random to find a background that's good for my eyes on any particular day. I don't always like the default colors.

yes, i like the color change. It makes it easier to read.

Hey guys, thanks for answering.

I was thinking about getting rid of it, but now that I know some people like and use it, I'll keep it!

Thanks for reading.

I use the white background option.

I think your default colors are just fine, but the option to change them is a good one; I probably should look into incorporating this into my own site, since it tends to look somewhere between weatherbeaten and hideous.

I use the yellow mustard-like background. Not sure why, easy on the eyes, I guess.

Dean, I like your default color scheme just fine. Which is a good thing, because I've never been able to get your color change feature to work. I mean, it just won't function for me.

That's probably because I'm addicted to using offbeat browsers-- Opera 6.06 (my default browser: your site looks fine in Opera usually, other times it looks really weird-- which always makes me wonder if you've been tinkering with your template) and the Gecko-based K-Meleon 0.7.1 (everything on your site always looks & works just fine in KM, except the color change won't work). I won't touch Internet Explorer unless I absolutely must. Is your color change feature specific to IE?

To follow up Mr. Burgess’ comments, I use Mozilla and can’t get your color changer to work either. Although, I have to admit that I like the _concept_ quite a bit...

I use Mozilla and the color change works... but until today I have never tried it.

Andrew and Michael:

Which versions of Mozilla are you using? K-Meleon 0.7.1 is based on Mozilla 1.2 beta. I wonder if we're looking at something that will work in Mozilla, but only in more recent versions.

The what?

i LOVE the random colors! right now i am enjoying fuscia... but sometimes i get lime or sky blue or lemon and they're all wonderful!

if the occasional dull brown or muddy green appears - i click on a new shade.

don't give up the rainbow, dean!

The color changer is cookie based. If your browser is blocking permanent cookies, the color changer won't work for you.

(I, too, like the default, Dean.)

I use your default colors, but I think the option to change colors is a nice one.

Color changer works for me using Opera 7.10. I like the default though; as Erica says above, it's easy on the eyes.

Paul - I am using version Mozilla 1.1 (It seems to work better than V 1.3).

Dean - I was just playing with my colors. Is the color changer just a sneaky way to inflate your hit counts? Just asking.

Sam - I agree. The Mustard color is definitely the best. Changing these colors is better than wasting my days away at homestarrunner.com

Posted by Michael Gersh on April 28, 2003 at 2:06 AM

I know you're joking, but, does it inflate the hit counter? I never thought of that.

I'm glad to know that people like that feature. Anyone I've ever asked about it has not used it, so I was thinking maybe it was a waste of time and I should take it off. Glad to hear folks like it.

By the way, if anyone cares, I don't do anything with your cookies except remember what color choices you like. And I plan to sell that information to the government as soon as I can figure out how to use it to track your daily movements...

Okay, you're right, it's the cookies. With cookies enabled, the color change feature works just fine for me in Opera 6.06 and K-Meleon 0.7.1.

Also in Opera 7.10, Opera 5.12, Internet Explorer 5.5, and Mozilla 1.0.

It doesn't work in Opera 3.62 or, strangely enough, in Lynx 2.8.3. ;-)

And as usual, Dean's World crashes Netscape 4.7, which (sez I) is Netscape's problem.

By the way, I like the mustard background. Though the default is still my favorite.

Posted by Paul Burgess on April 28, 2003 at 11:59 AM

Honestly? The default color scheme is so-so, but easy on the eyes, and the color changer just doesn't satisfy me. What would really be cool is a skinnable blog. But then again, I LOVE eye-candy :)

What I'd like is the ability to select a color based on its hexadecimal code. That way, I can make it fit my desktop color scheme exactly. (I know, I'm geeky too.)

Posted by Brian on April 29, 2003 at 10:17 AM

I went and edited the cookie for your site myself, and got the colors I wanted. Sweet!

Posted by Brian on April 29, 2003 at 1:56 PM

So many blogs look alike. Being able to see the colors for this one makes it that much easer to make the whole Dean experience that much more distinct.
