Idol Thoughts
Laugh all you want, it's still an addicting show. Although last week's episode was awful, this week's was much better. Most of the judges were tripping on acid, but what can you do? They don't count anyway. And, as cruel as it is to say, the callers voted off one of the right people. Now, if they only get rid of the sexy but boring Carmen Rasmusen, this would be a show full nothing but truly gifted people, and a real horserace.
Although I begin to think that there's no stopping Ruben Studdard. Not that I'd want to, but Clay Aiken increasingly looks like a one-trick pony, and the incredibly talented Trenyce just can't get no respect.
Sometimes it seems like the voting is a week late. This week I gave up on Carmen and decided Rickey was more interesting and then BAM! It was nice to see Kim Caldwell get a break though, after the judges dumped on her for her best performance to date (at least you couldn't call it complacent).
I'm thinking real hard about putting Kim Locke in the top 3 instead of Trenyce though. She just keeps getting better and better.
As I read on usenet: Clay's one trick is: having a really good voice and the skill to use it flawlessly...
I called Clay as a finalist way back in the preliminaries. He has some sort of goofy appeal in a Buddy Holly sort of vein. I wonder how long Josh can go? He is not the most talented person out there, but I have this theory that there are hundreds of thousands of military wives sitting home, watching Idol to take their minds off of worrying about their loved ones in harms way. And every one of them is voting for Josh, multiple times, every week.
It's just a theory...
Also - nice to see Rueben wear soemthing that doesn't have Birmingham's area code plastered all over it. I hpoe the tourist council of AL is paying him well :) He does have an amazing voice though.
Well, Clay only sings syrupy. That's my complaint. My growing complaint, anyway. He's still in the top 3.
As for Josh: he keeps pulling out good performances to make up for the bad ones. Yes, there are probably a lot of people voting for him because he's in the military. But here's the other thing: he's the only really country guy out there. Country music has a somewhat shrinking, but still QUITE huge, audience. And he's the only one addressing that audience.
Add both those traits together, and he's got a core audience. Indeed, at this point I'd be willing to predict that it no longer matters how much longer he's on the show. He'll get a recording contract out of Nashville. There's almost no chance he won't.
I still can't believe Rickey was voted off!! And I really can't believe how Carmen is still there, the girl can not sing.. she is a damn good yodler but singing NO!!! How is it that, they decided to use the votes from the week before and the week of the elimination week and the week before Rickey wasn't even in the bottom 3 but then the next week he's voted off?? things that make you say mmmm?! I still think Rickey is going to do quite well with his singing career.. because although he is a bit goofy he has a beautiful voice..
