GPS Jammer Hoax
There's much noise making the rounds about how the Iraqis are using Global Position Satellite jamming systems to mess up coalition forces' targeting systems. A lot of people are mad at the Russians about it. But as Donald Sensing reports, the GPS jamming stories are mostly bunk. It appears that the Russians are making themselves rich at Iraqi expense, not ours. Read the materials Reverend Sensing links to, and you'll see why.
Dean, it may, or may not be "bunk". I suppose if you are talking about fights between two armies in the field, a 100 foot CEP (that's what you get with the backup INS guidance) isn't too bad.
But. That's very, very bad when you are talking about block by block city fighting. That's the problem...
So, yes, Mr. Sensing's "debunk" is strictly true, but irrelevant. We very well may face not being able to using JDAMs within Baghdad to minimize civilian casualties. Please see

for details.
I remember reading somewhere that the US bought a number of the Russian GPS jammers about a year or two ago to test thier effectiveness. I would guess we either adjusted the guidance system to compensate or found that it was not very effective because of the backup INS guidance, or the jamming radius is insufficient to do more than disturb final course corrections near the target.
The debunking material published by Donald Sensing and CPO Sharkey isn't contradicted by that Strategy Page article, Casey. Indeed, if you read all the way to the end, they admit that the Air Force found ways to defeat the so-called jammers years ago.
News today also is that they have destroyed the jammers anyway.
In other words, this appears still to be much ado about nothing.
I heard a briefing on radio today by an air force commander (some Victor) - he was asked about the GPS jammers - he said that all 6 GPS Jammers have been taken out and that a few of them were taken out by GPS missiles, which tells you how effective they were :-)
My point was that the corrections that Sensing mentioned (INS) still only gave JDAMs 100-foot accuracty, which was mentioned in both articles. But, that still wasn't very good for inner city fighting.
Let's hope they don't have any more of those puppies hidden somewhere.
