Creepy Manipulative Songs
I haven't heard the Darryl Worley "Have You Forgotten" song. So I may be wrong. I know some of you are going to disagree with me. I even admit to being something of a hypocrite, because I think that bashing people for unapologetic patriotism is an ugly thing. But I never want to hear it.
Why? Michele fairly well explains it for me. And, although the Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique is a phenomenal album, I want even less to do with their new "It's for the OIIIIILLLLLL!!!!" idiocy.
Basically, Michele says it for me. Then again, she likes that syrupy "Sister Christian" soft-rock ballad from the 1980s, so there's something obviously twisted about her.

You're just figuring that out?
I've blogged about this...
I have a different take.
John Mellencamp has recorded an anti-war song.
I blogged about it at http://www.rubyan.com/politics/archives/001033.html.

Um, if I get this right, you don't want to listen to a song 'cuz you read one stanza of the lyrics on someone else's blog, and it creeped you out? Or did I miss something?
I suppose that's why you didn't reply when I sent you a link to the song. At the time I was surprised that country stations weren't playing it; it seemed to be a natural for them.
I just thought of something: you are down on Worley's song (ok, it's not in the same class as Jackson's "Where were you?"), but you still put up your "18 months later" post. He hasn't forgotten, and you're still mad.
What's the difference?
Read Michele's post.
If you love the song, God bless you. I just don't, and won't, and would rather not hear it because, well, "melodrama" is the nicest word that comes to mind. Let's just leave it at that. Why fight? If you love the song, enjoy.
By the way, I've read all the lyrics. %-)
Where were you when they built the ladder ta heavin...?

If you do want to hear the whole song open this link and scroll down below the lyrics then click play on the little green box. It does provoke that shiver of outrage all over again. Like it or not it is a powerful song.
Dean,
I'm with you and Michelle on this. Remember Barry Sadler's "Ballad of the Green Berets", circa 1964 or so? It quickly got mocked as the "Ballad of the Black Pajamas", with appropriate new lyrics. And all this before the 60's antiwar mob got into high gear. Let's stick with "Graceland" as Peggy Noonan suggested.

Dean, I'm not in love with it, I just wanted to get a couple ideas straight. Ok, so you've read all the lyrics. Heh.
I still thought you might want to actually listen to it before rendering judgement. :)
On another thread (not about the song. exactly): I still think -however creepy you think the lyrics are- that the basic theme of the song is the same as your recent post ("18 Months Later"). So just what's the difference?
That your writing's better? :)
Me no getting this issue. Was Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture creepy because it was manipulative because it celebrated/glorified a military victory? I haven't heard Worley's song (not a country fan) but if it's true that more than a million Americans have participated in anti-war rallies thus far...then hell yes, they HAVE forgotten and OUGHT to be called out for it. More power to Darryl for that...
This song is a complete joke. His basis of "have you forgotten" 9/11 so let's go to war with Iraq is frankly moronic. Compare Apples to Apples. Should we have gone to war with Mexico after Pearl Harbor???
Not one connection between 9/11 and Iraq. So don't be a FU[KING sheep.
dean is my god even though he likes my sister named elizabeth he is still hott and you cant have him HALLER
