Does Greenspan Know About This?

So. It looks like hemlines are going up. Which is supposedly good news for the economy. What I can't figure out is if I'm happy to see it, given the kind of stuff that hides under a lot of skirts these days. (Thanks to Paul Fallon for the link.)

Well, I happen to like low hemlines on women of most age groups. It's only a few times in a century that some lady like Cyd Charisse graces the world with a truly great pair of legs. Go rent "Singing in the Rain" from your local video store, and you'll see what I mean.

In addition, when the general economy is crummy, larger business firms advertise and small businesses such as mine thrive. I sell mailing lists for direct mail marketing.

Cyd Charisse had world-class gams. Singin' In The Rain is one of my all-time favorites. Although it's interesting, if you watch her dance scenes with Gene Kelley closely enough, you can tell she's taller than he is, although they do their best with the choreography to hide it. :-)

Actors apparently don't have to be tall to have talent and create just the right illusion on the Magic Lantern. I recall that Alan Ladd was only about 5'5" tall and Laird Cregar was a hulking 6'3". But when they sat together in a particularly menacing scene set in a San Francisco coffee shop in "This Gun for Hire" (1942), Ladd's Philip Raven looked like he could cut Cregar's Willard Gates apart with his little pen knife. (Veronica Lake, who made at least three film noire classics with Ladd, was only 5'2".)

Dean, you're a Texan, sort of. How in hell did the city fathers of Amarillo let a gorgeous doll like Cyd Charisse escape from their burg when she was a kid? If I'd been the mayor of that place, I would have chained her up in front of city hall until some Hollywood bigshot like Samuel Goldwyn paid a monstrous bribe to free her and take her off to wonderland.

Texan, "sort of?"

Them's fightin' words, mister.

But if I was mayor I'd chain her in muh house. I ain't no fool to let no no acount Hollywood slicksters be sniffin' around our wimmen...

Arnold,

I take exception to your comparison of Cyd Charisse's to other women's. I have seen many women in short skirts whose legs were more than beautiful. I also admire the way many women fill out bikinis and t-shirts, especially when those shirts are wet. I have also seen many women with great legs modeling lingerie. You probably have never seen beautiful women modeling lingerie. I have. The most beautiful women on television appear on the Spanish the language cable television station Univision. I do not understand anything they say; but I do not care, either.

Kevin, you got one-up on me with the cable TV Spanish ladies. We have no cable in our part of rural Cross Plains Township in western Dane County, Wisconsin, and I'm too cheap and too busy to put up a satellite dish.

They have cable TV at the fitness center on the far west side of Madison where my wife and I work out for an hour or so each day. But the guys who program the ceiling-mounted TV channels have no imagination. So all we get is CNN, soap operas with dulcette-voiced vamps who emote so quietly that one can't understand what they are saying, and the usual 28-year-old coifed anchorettes staring into the teleprompters from which they read their "news", while the sportscaster and weatherfrog wait for her to shut up so they can deliver their own stuff to a waiting world. In short, everything except senoritas with fine legs.

Anyway, Cyd Charisse suits me just fine. And she speaks good English, too.

Mr. Esmay:
Sir, the next time you post a link about hemlines going up, I want to see some hemlines, damnit!

Posted by Andrew Cory on February 24, 2003 at 5:30 PM

Dean, amen with Andrew on that. One picture of a pretty woman is worth 10,000 words.

If skirts rise enough, I don't give two-thirds of a damn what happens to the economy, ya dig?

(Hey, Dean, you want the URL to the Celebrity Legs Blog?)

Posted by CGHill on February 24, 2003 at 9:14 PM

Of course I want it. Let's see it, man!

Almost a no-brainer: celebritylegs.blogspot.com.

What mystifies me is that he hasn't installed a link back to his actual gallery.
