Left<-->Right

So. The ever racially-sensitive Fritz Hollings (D) has joined Charlie Rangel (D) in proposing that we re-institute the draft. Proving, once again, that the left and right, some time in the last decade or so, switched places when no one was looking.

It's happened before. It'll probably happen again.

It might not be a bad idea to give every American 6 months of training after high school, say between June and December, and then send them back home to start college or career...

The idea, though, of giving any president that much military without a congressionally declared war gives me the chills. Indeed, it gave John Adams fits, and he was president when such a thing was proposed!

I consider myself a leftist, but the draft proposal... The kindest thing that can be said for it is that it follows a poor premise to its logical end. This might actually make it a worse idea than if it had a good premise and bad logic...

and

The latter is linked to in the former.

Dean, found you from your comments on Ken Layne's site, will add you to my "Influentual Reading" section.

It's not like Fritz Hollings to come up with something like that - unless he heard that boot camps were being privatized and Disney was going to operate them.

Congressman Nick Smith (R) MI-7 introduced legislation to reintroduce the draft last October
