Abstract Art
Would you believe a photographer could create astonishingly beautiful abstract art with nothing but a camera and a train yard full of boxcars? With no digital alteration at all? Astounding, but true. Tim Davis has done so, and shows off his work at his Trained Eye Gallery.
I like his work quite well. Although I think it also raises interesting questions about abstract art. As one of those who believs that abstract art long ago got out of control, I find it interesting that a camera and a train yard can create images every bit as interesting as anything done by artists who've made themselves millionaires working with paints. (Got this one from Jerry.)
Those photographs are really awesome. It's hard to believe they aren't paintings. Thanks for the link, I think I'll steal it.
Gotta say thats some of the best abstract work I've seen in years....
Of course it raises questions about the act of creation. Does a photographer truly create a picture when all he or she does is press a button? Compared to the act of creating a (say) painting or sculpture?
I say yes. Just taking the time to slap paint on a canvas or chip out a block of wood or stone doesn't make it creative. And speaking as a (very) amateur photographer, capturing just the right moment to show other people what you see is very difficult...
Dean: did I ever send you the shots I took of the "Summer of Freedom" memorial here at Miami University? I don't know if anyone else knows but that voter registration drive (which resulted in the deaths of three young men as depicted in "Mississippi Burning") began right here in Oxford, Ohio on Western College.
Yeah, nice pix, Casey.
