Race Baiting, Michigan Style

Here in Michigan, a rather typical race-resentment peddler by the name of Jennifer Granholm is running for governor, against a somewhat uninteresting, avuncular fellow with the unfortunate name of Dick Posthumus. Posthumus has recently been running ads pointing out her support for racist policies. She's responding not by denying most of the charges, but by accusing him of "playing the race card"--as if telling the simple truth is somehow a dirty trick.

Most believe the racist will beat the avuncular Posthumus, although polls show her lead narrowing. One way or the other, though, it's interesting that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Thomas Bray of the Detroit News has more on the story.

At least Bray spelled his name right.

Greetings,

Interesting. I see over on some of the Catholic blogs they're all riled up against Granholm for another reason ... because she's pro-choice. Hmmm now if everybody gets together.

Cheers

Catholic blogs? Hmmm. Any URL's to share?

Paul,
Greetings,
There are many Catholic bloggers, "members" of "St. Blogs," and the issues covered are certainly not just religion. While I have a fairly large list, the best is kept here: http://praiseofglory.com/blogs.htm

Two of the more "popular" sites - with frequent comments made by NROs Rod Dreher are Mark Shea "Catholic and Enjoying It! (http://markshea.blogspot.com) and Amy Welborn "In Between Naps" (http://www.amywelborn.blogspot.com)

Cheers

>>"as if telling the simple truth is somehow a dirty trick."

If it is the truth about a Democrat, it IS a dirty trick.

The irony of seeing ANY Democrat accuse a Republican of playing the race card is really rich. Any time Jennifer Granholm, or any Democrat for that matter, supports slavery reparations perforce she, or any Democrat, plays the race card. Postuhumus is merely stating the obvious here.

Every voter and nonvoter in Michigan realizes that a new governor Jennifer Granholm will grant Wayne County and Detroit in particular, everything they wish. She will do this simply out deference because of their supporting her campaign. This is not race baiting. This is merely stating the obvious.

The only real loser I see in this is the Webster’s standard dictionary. If Dean accurately quotes Postuhumus then both Granholm and Posthumus are abusing this word. Racism is properly defined as: “a belief in the superiority of one race over another.” Webster’s latest waters this down allowing it instead to mean simple prejudice or discrimination.

I am tiring of this overused, overabused word.

If you check an unabridged dictionary you'll find that, like many complicated words, it's got many layers of meaning.

However, I think it should be obvious by most interpretations that any program which grants special priviledges to people based on race, or punishes people based on race, is, ipso facto, racist. Some might argue that it's a "necessary" racism, I suppose, but it's inarguable that it's racist.

Granholm's refusal to reject the deeply racist (and racially divisive) doctrine of "slavery reparations," choosing instead to attack her opponent for bringing it up, makes her an advocate of racist policies--and makes an accusation of racism perfectly reasonable in my view.

That she advocates them for the condescending white-liberal-guilt reasons doesn't make it less racist. In fact, it makes it more racist. "Those poor darkies just aren't smart enough or motivated enough make it without us liberals to give 'em a helping hand." That's nothing but racism with a kind face. It is disgusting, it is unAmerican, and it is racist.
