N.Z. Bear predicts that Senate Democrats will use stalling tactics on Iraq, and even predicts what the tactic will be. Convenient, as it will also allow them to continue to avoid taking a position on the war.
I know I'm not the only one who's noticed that the entire "debate" in Washington has been between Republicans who want to go and Republicans who don't want to go, with maybe two or three Democrats being brave enough to take a stance. (Why oh why did you retire, Bob Kerry?)
I seriously hope Bear's wrong. The country needs the Democrats now more than ever to step up to the plate. We've had an entire year to think about this. There is no reason at all to assume that doing anything now will affect the November elections terribly much--but much reason to think they'll be hurt if they're seen as obstructionists. "Caution" may please some folks, but methinks "pussyfooting" is how most voters will see it. The question is not "why now?" The question is, "What's the point in waiting any longer?"
Maybe the Dems think that the old saw applies here:
"When you observe your enemy destroying himself, don't get in the way."
Maybe that's how they see it.
That's a shame because guys like Lieberman and Kerry could point the way, i.e., take a tough stand on the war on terror.
It wouldn't be hard to out-flank the administration on most days. Especially with guys like Scowcroft, Powell, Eagleburger out there.
You can say that they'll lose their most liberal wing of the party, but hell they're just going to vote for Cynthia McKinney and the Greens anyway.
:^)
It's time for a Sister Souljah moment.
