The fabulous Susanna Cornett and the inimitable Bryan Preston of Junkyard Blog report that a New Hampshire woman is suing the Catholic Church, hoping to force them to either start accepting women as priests or lose their tax-exempt status as a religious organization. When I first read it, I thought, "Oh, go be a Wiccan priestess and shut up." Then I though, "I hope she wins. It would almost certainly be overturned on appeal, and the blow against the Victim Industry would be delicious to watch."
Then I thought harder. Wait a minute, guys. The original story linked to appears on a men's rights site, listing only a local news station as source. A quick Google search for the story only turns it up on the same local news station. The story is dating May 22, 2002. I spent some time searching and couldn't find anything more on this story except what I've linked to here. So all we have is a stale news story and an interview on a radio station (Which station? When? Do we have any links or anything? No other sources?)
Are we certain this story is for real? Are we certain it hasn't already been thrown out of court, which it seems like it should be? Or might not even be a put-on by some DJs? cut on the bias and JunkYark Blog are excellent sites, but shouldn't we be working harder to verify our sources on these things? Do we have any more information on these issues? Not trying to attack anyone here, just trying to point out we may be making mockery of something that's old news, dead news, or even fake news.

The fabulous Susanna has posted an update showing further sources for this story. However, they amount to only a secondhand account of a story that supposedly appeared in the Boston Globe. A search of the actual Boston Globe archives turns up nothing (I tried myself) but message board material, which I'm willing to bet is unedited and probably unread by newspaper staff. Beyod that we have only short recountings in Christian magazines, dated after the Boston Globe posting. They contain no source and no information beyond what's been floating around online. I remain suspicious.Noted Pundit Ara Rubyan had a story a while back that reminds me of the possibility that this maybe some person or group playing games. Where is the followup to this story? Was it thrown out of court? I have no doubt that Bryan heard the interview. But is she for real? The story of the radio interview sounds too good to be true, you know?
