Being Queer Means You Oppose Missile Defense?

It's Clay Waters Day here at Dean's World. I've been meaning to post some extended thoughts on the fascinating debate that's been going on in the gay community over political issues. Now that gay rights are officially enshrined into law in most of America, and few people have any real problems with gays, a number of gay men, lesbians, and other parts of the "GLBT" community are starting to wake up and ask themselves:

"So being gay means I oppose missile defense, hate guns and gun owners, want more centralized government, oppose social security privatization, oppose school choice, and love paying more and more taxes? Being gay means I have to like Al Gore?"

"Yes dear, it says so right here on your membership card," says...

...gay radical Richard Goldstein. "Hold on a minute!" says lifelong gay rights advocate Andrew Sullivan. Sullivan is the man who almost single-handedly put the issue of gay marriage on the national political map, but Goldstein dismisses him contemptuously as a "homocon." And they're off to the races!

I've been meaning to write much more about this but I simply haven't had time. I've finally given up and decided to just let Clay do the talking. Read his articles, and his links, and you'll get the scoop.

While you're at it, you may also want to view this chat/interview session between Sullivan and lesbianoid firebrand Camille Paglia. (You've got to love Paglia. Anyone who would call Paul Begala "a yapping mongoose with the ethical sense of a stone" has my undying admiration.)

Grab a bowl of popcorn while you're at it. It'll enhance the experience, I promise.

In a neat segue from my last post about gun ownership...

Ever hear of the Pink Pistols, Dean? Since you are a card-carrying NRA member and all. Heh heh heh.

No, but a quick Google Search found them:

Pink Pistols home page.

Good for them. Good, good, good for them. We need more people like 'em.

"Now that gay rights are officially enshrined into law in most of America, and few people have any real problems with gays"

In most states someone can lose a job because of their sexual orientation. The nationally enshrined law denies gays the right/recognition of gay marriage.

Last I read, Marsha, something like 38 states have statutes making it illegal to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation. As for marriage: this remains a political controversy for people in both political parties, as well as with independents of all stripes.

I'm also not aware of any national law banning gay marriage. This issue is currently open to individual states to decide, like most issues.

Given that the national Democratic Party opposes gay marriage, this is also a relatively moot point; only one Democrat of national prominence--Robert Reich--has come out and endorsed it, and he's only a candidate for governor in Massachussetts right now.

I'd also like to make what I think is the more important point: the most effective strategy for gaining national acceptance is generally going to be by having activists in both political parties. Otherwise your fortunes rise and fall with with the fortunes of one party or the other.

Gay writer Andrew Sullivan has done more good for the cause of gay acceptance, and gay marriage, than almost anyone else in the gay community in the last half-decade or so. He's done so by arguing intelligently and passionately, in a non-partisan fashion that doesn't demonize his opponents or treat them like scum.

Nice to see an old Apple II user again, by the way. Welcome. :-)

Only 10 states out of 50 baning discrimination on sexual orientation, 2 S.O. and gender identity.

There are 35 laws against same sex marriage, and the federal Defense of Marriage Act was made law in 1996
