Who Is Jane Galt?

Jane Galt has written a very nice essay about the real center of American politics. Her best line:

No one gets to pick some time in the distant past when everyone was right, and declare that they draw their moral authority from the denizens of that halcyon era. The fifties and the sixties are over, folks. If your idea can't stand on its own now, its popular history won't help it.

I do take issue with one thing she says, where she defines Pat Buchanan as the far-right counterpart of Ralph Nader. I think it's about time we start to acknowledge that Buchanan nowadays represents a sort of roving force of his own. On economic issues, these days he sounds eerily like Ralph Nader on most issues. He's sort of a throwback to Pre-World War I conservatism, which, whatever its merits, doesn't fit well on today's political template. A better example of "far right" by today's markers would probably be Howard Phillips over at the Constitution Party (F.K.A. US Taxpayer's Party).

Anyway, she makes great points about the flawed assumptions too many people have when arguing political issues. She's also runs a fun blog. (Thanks to media guru Paul Fallon for the link.)

Hooha!

Actually her best line is:

"I'm sure that many of you are even now mentally compasing notes which point out the ways in which I have violated these precepts. No doubt. I have also been known to snap at my family, put off until tomorrow what I ought to do today, and leave my bed unmade. Manners and morals should be mountains to which we aspire, not caves in which we hide.

"Anyway, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong."

hee hee!
