If you are reading this, you are most likely overweight and there's a good chance you're obese. Don't believe me? It only takes being 30 pounds overweight to be considered medically obese. That's right, I said thirty pounds. About 60% of all Americans are now overweight, and a full third are obese. I think this is a crisis that isn't going to go away any time soon. A lighthearted article by Kenneth Green over at Tech Central Station, Darwin's Dangerous Diet, explores some ideas that some of us who are chronically obese have long wondered about.
In related news, the February issue of Atlantic Monthly had an article I wish I'd caught sooner on new theories in evolutionary biology, positing that infectious diseases can be managed by natural selection principles, and positing that relatively harmless things like obesity and even (gulp) homosexuality may have origins in infections, not to mention deadly conditions heart disease and cancer. Pretty wild stuff, but interesting to read.
Truely tremendous blog!
