Ms. Information

A wonderful thing happened last year that got forgotten while the economy was busy tanking and war was busy brewing. The Independent Women's Forum began its "Take Back the Campus" campaign by publishing, in numerous college journals, the Top Ten Feminist Myths that continue to be perpetrated by so-called women's rights activists. I still hear angry young women hurl some of those lies at me, not realizing that they've been duped, and that their anger at mythical wrongs only harms relations between the sexes.

I must say, it's an exciting time to be alive, when antiestablishmentarians are again assaulting the status quo on our nation's campuses, and activism is invigorated once again by new ideas and fresh faces. You'd think a lot of those old '60s radicals would be in heaven. Strange that they aren't...

The only quibble I have with the Ten Myths (and it is a minor one)is that "gender" IS a social construct--or at least an academic one. There is no scientific basis for the term "gender", it comes from language studies. Humans and other animals have sex, words have gender.

"Humans and other animals have sex" You bet your ass we do! Just not together...

Yeah, it's funny how people have forgotten that "sex" used to be how you describe male and female, whereas "gender" was originally entirely a linguistic construct. The English language has three genders (male, female, and neuter), whereas some have far more, invoking states like animate, inanimate, young, old, etc. and having nothing to do with sex.

Alas, "gender" has fallen into common usage to describe whether you're an innie or an outie. Such are the vagaries of the quirky English tongue.
