Clinton Crushes Obama In West Virginia

I’m not sure how significant this is, but Senator Clinton just trounced Senator Obama thoroughly.

I’m not sure what the significance is, so why don’t you tell me?

The only significance I can see it that it will further delude Ms. Clinton into thinking she has a chance to win the nomination.

The DNC process to become the nominee makes no sense.  Clinton carries pretty much all the states a Democratic candidate needs to win the general election while Obama carries states the Democratic party has no chance of winning during that same election and everyone expects him to perform as their nominee against McCain.  Why!?

Were this the GOP, Clinton would be the clear nominee already.

You know how, in late season football, one team is out of contention and the other already has a lock on home field advantage through the playoffs?

Punning Pundit’s last blog post..Don’t ask, don’t… something?

What is really disgusting is how Hillary has been playing the race card. She has blatantly said, "White Americans want me."

Shameless.

Proof that I am liberal:

I feel HER pain.

Jesse,

Why is it such a crime to admit whites prefer her over Obama when it’s clear blacks prefer Obama over her? Obama isn’t getting the white vote. Clinton is.

No matter how fashionable it is to slam whitey, whitey is still the supermajority in this country and what they want must be respected.

It’s not "playing the race card" when stating a statistical fact.

I’m sick of the fact that no one bats an eye if you’re a proud black person, or Hispanic, or Cuban, or Asian, but say you’re a proud white person - you’re a damned racist. Note that what white people think is important - you’re a damned racist.

I’m white and I’m proud of being white. I’m proud of the achievements of the white Western world. I’m a proud white man. I think there’s no shame in saying that. And there isn’t a single ethnic people on this planet that doesn’t have blood on their hands. I’m not going to swallow that whites should be especially ashamed of the past because people say we should. Let he who is without sin…

And I will not have my opinions on a matter be pushed to the sidelines simply because I’m white. And I will not chide Mrs. Clinton for pointing out that white Americans want her over Obama as long as it’s perfectly acceptable for Obama (or any other racial minority politician) to use their race in support of their cause.

"Disgusting"? Obama has upwards of 90% black voters. Is it "disgusting" to know that blacks are voting as a racial bloc for him, for what can only be his racial identity?

What’s the principle here? “Disgusting” because someone votes their identity or do you need to know if they’re white or black before you decide identity-voting is “disgusting”?

Well, I’m not thrilled with the whole racial pride thing — or racial guilt. My soul is not white or black or whatever. I’m an individual, and I’m proud or not proud based on what I do or what I don’t do. As a Christian, I don’t expect to be judged based on what other white people did.

Not only that, I identify far more with my own ethnicity and country than with some vague thing such as "white." I’m English, Irish, Welsh and Greek. And American.

But talk about white? What the heck does that mean? Russians are white. Italians are white. Germans are white. The French are white. Indians from India are racially white people, and so are the Arabs, Jews, Persians,  and Turks. You’re gonna tell me that we all have something in common other than our shared humanity and things common to all mankind?

The problem with the whole racial discussion is it confuses race with culture. Culturally, there are differences, but they are based on different ways of thinking, not different biology. They tend to be based on ethnicity and national history, not "racial" history. Black Americans have about as much in common with Black Africans as I do.

This mixing up of race with culture is at the root of a lot of our problems, especially in the U.S., where we can’t discuss cultural dysfunction because it gets tied into race.

urthshu, kevin,

i think it’s disgusting more for the fact that hillary is calling attention to it.  obama may be getting the african american vote but he’s not presenting himself as "the black candidate."

kevin,

on the contrary, the thinking is that the states that clinton is winning will go democratic no matter who the nominee is, while obama may make them competitive in lots of previously red states.  of course, if you ask me they’d stand a better chance on the same ticket than on separate ones, but nobody asked me ;p

Indeed.  Outside the liberal archipelago, Obama has close to zero real appeal.  And then there’s the (ugly but real) Bradley Effect to consider too.

This was a preview of coming attractions, barring some huge gaffe on McCain’s part.  (Such as, for example, choosing Huckabee as a running mate, as was all over the intarwebs the other day.)

I disagree with this statement by Kevin D, but not harshly.

Race  matters much less than culture. Let me say that again: race  matters much less than culture.

So, Yes, I am white, but I am not "proud" of it (or embarrased by it.)

However, I am proud to be an American. I am proud to be a product of Western civilization. I am proud to be a Catholic. I join many non-whites in this fellowship.

America was founded on ideals, not race. It would be much better for our country to subtly de-emphasis race, and re-energize the culture (hard work, independence, honesty, modesty, action movies where guy gets the girl, sports — all that jazz.

Yeah I have trouble thinking of "white" as something one would have ethnic pride in, as there are too many variations of it to be found in this country. Black people, who should really be considered not a race but an ethnicity, have a unified sub-culture of their own that is undeniable, with good parts and bad parts to it just like any, but it is unique. If you go over to Africa, in at least most of Africa there is no sense of "black identity" because there are too many different languages, cultures, and sub-types of "black person." Aside from a few political movements here and there, genetically black Africans don’t think of themselves as "black."

Similarly, very few people of white European stock have ever thought of themselves as "white." In this country, pale skin is by far the majority, and the mother continent, like Europe, has many different languages and ethnicities and traditions like Africa. The difference is, because there are so many whites, we actually see multiple white "cultures." There’s southern culture, there’s midwestern culture, there’s southwestern culture, there’s… well I could go on, but isn’t it obvious that the "white culture" in, say, Dallas Texas doesn’t really look much at all like the "white culture" in Seattle or New York City?

There’s nothing wrong with being broadly proud of being European I suppose, but even the Europeans struggle to think of themselves in those terms (which is part of why the EU project is such a stumbling half-success). A hundred years ago, being Catholic broadly meant you weren’t seen as “white.” Being Italian or certain types of Irish meant you weren’t “white.” Now they kind of are, but that seems to be more about government definitions than anything really you can put your finger on.
