sure, 100 years in Iraq sounds great
I fully understand the context of John McCain’s quote about 100 years in Iraq - a century in which there would be zero injuries or casualties to American troops. Kumbaya! However, as I explain and document at Nation-Building, McCain (and Petraeus and Crocker, in yesterday’s testimony) aren’t quite clear on when that 100 years begins.

Some time in the next few years.
The Iraqi Army is getting better every month. They did pretty much all the heavy lifting in Basra. They’ll be able to do it all soon, and by then there may not be anyone left to fight anyway.
It is true that we don’t know when we will win. I don’t know of many conflicts that were not trivial when it has ever been known when it would be over. Asking to know that ahead of time seems to me to betray a profound ignorance of history.
Dave Justus’s last blog post..New bio-fuel advance
Don’t be silly, Dave. Everyone knows it’s only bumblers like Bush who get into wars without working out exactly when they’ll end. Heck, WWII was much more complicated, but the Axis and Allies used weekly conference calls to keep everyone running on schedule. There’s the iconic “Is December 6th good for you? How about the 7th?” exchange between Tojo and FDR. And that famous gaffe when Hitler caught his flight to Brazil and completely forgot to tell his staff to call Japan with the new surrender date. Boy, was Truman steamed about that one!
