Inv: Can’t say I agree with your conclusion. To me, the utter failure of reform even after Bush was re-elected with powerful coat-tails in 2004 indicates that Social Security reform is a dead issue. It’s unfortunate that the left demagogued the issue so effectively, but they did. Voters don’t want it. This is very sad but I’m not in the least bit upset with McCain for seeing the writing on the wall.
If it helps cheer you up, there’s reason to believe the system won’t go bankrupt. It may be a total ripoff, especially to our children, but the concerns over its eventually going bust are probably overstated.
Leaning strongly for McCain this Fall. Do like Obama, though, and will still keep door open for a change of mind based on events (don’t wanna become too dogmatic).
Too true, I’m afraid about SS…though my brief on that is no longer so much its pending doom (there is still that - the case, in my view, hasn’t been overstated), but the fact that those SS funds are just what we need to make the average American independent of government and corporations by the time said American is approximately 50. I want us independent of Big Government and Big Corporation - but it takes money to be independent. Once upon a time, it took land - but as we’re not going to all go farm our aliquot 60 acres, we have to go for second best…monetary independence.
Back on topic - I like McCain’s foriegn policy, too…especially his proposed “League of Democracies”, which is in many ways similar to my “Union of Democratic States”.

It’s the ripoff to our children part I’m concerned about.

It’s still not going to change.
As I say, it’s not going to bankrupt our children. It’s just going to be the bad deal that it’s always been.
